5 Reasons Tumblr + Yahoo Is Good For Users
Whenever a spunky, growing startup gets sold to an established player, the cry goes out. Users won’t like it. The culture will be ruined. The startup will be subsumed by its parent. Sometimes it’s true, but in the case of the Yahoo purchase of Tumblr, I think there’s an argument […]
Congrats to NYC Generation Tech judge David Karp on Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr, a great NYC startup success! Thoughts from NYCEDC’s Entrepreneur at Large Steve Rosenbaum on the news: http://onforb.es/19VqUv8
Tech Hubs Flourish Outside of Silicon Valley
Mashable highlights the growth of New York City tech, thanks to NYCEDC’s groundbreaking Applied Sciences NYC tech education and other initiatives to support entrepreneurship in the city:
To help facilitate economic growth in each of the five boroughs, the New York City Economic Development Corporation is following the startup movement closely. It’s a non-profit whose goal is to encourage redevelopment programs and ultimately create new jobs across the city.
The organization has been focused on building an engineering campus — called NYC Tech Campus (Applied Sciences NYC) — in the boroughs. With Cornell University and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology partnerships, the initiative will provide 20,000 construction jobs and 8,000 permanent jobs, along with more than $23 billion in economic activity over the next 30 years.

New York’s share of venture capital dollars has doubled over the last ten years while its rival, Silicon Valley, has grown at a much slower pace and New England has sputtered, a new study from the Center for an Urban Future shows.
Between the first quarter of 2003 to the first quarter of this year, the New York area’s share of VC investments surged to 11.4% from 5.3%.
Silicon Valley’s share rose to 31.7% from 28.6% over the same period while New England’s share fell to 10.2% from 14.8%.

Paperless Post To Expand in Lower Manhattan and Create 76 New Jobs
NYCEDC and Empire State Development announced that Paperless Post, an innovative online communication design company, will relocate and expand its operations to Lower Manhattan. The company has outgrown its old space, and will move to 115 Broadway in Lower Manhattan in September 2013. The expansion will create 76 new jobs and retain 51 existing positions.
In March, Paperless Post was selected as one of the winners—from more than 300 applicants—of NYCEDC’s Take the H.E.L.M. competition, which encourages creative and innovative businesses to open a new office or expand an existing office in Lower Manhattan and to encourage growth and diversification of the area’s economy. Paperless Post was the winner of the “Technology Track” and awarded $250,000 to assist their move and expansion.
Watch the video to hear from the founders of Paperless Post on their move to Lower Manhattan. Find out more about Take the H.E.L.M. and apply for the second round by July 15, 2013.

World to NYC: Central Eastern Europe
By Patricia Bayley, Senior Project Manager, Center for Economic Transformation
From May 6th to 8th, NYCEDC’s International Desk will welcome its first Central Eastern European delegation! Representing such countries as Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany and Romania, the delegates will partake in panel discussions, service provider presentations, company tours, and multiple networking events. Panel discussion topics include an introduction to NYC Startup Scene, NYC Investor Environment, and a candid chat from “expats” who’ve made it in NYC. With three of our panelists now recent authors, we’ll also give the delegates time to meet and greet the experts who literally “wrote the book” on their perspective fields.
Also, in a World to NYC first, the companies will be touring Long Island City to learn more about that area’s burgeoning startup scene. The tour will include a visit to NY Designs, Songza, See.Me and Aereo.
Getting here wasn’t easy; in partnership with European technology accelerator iCatapult, we selected just 15 companies to participate from different fields of technology such as media-tech, mobile-tech, and enterprise-tech.
Starting Monday, May 6th, the delegates will spend three days learning more about the New York City tech scene and the different facets of successfully bringing their tech company to New York City. Stay tuned for updates from their experience.
