Crain’s New York Business reported on NYCEDC’s Applied Sciences initiative and more:
‘Economic development in the U.S. is about stadium-building in many places, or stealing businesses with tax abatements,’ said Bruce Katz, director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institute. ‘What New York City is doing with the applied sciences is a very different kind of economic development. It sets the platform for substantial job growth over time and the diversification of the economy. This is major-league economic development.’ Other cities and states are eyeing the EDC’s actions, according to Mr. Katz. ‘[The EDC] has the ability to change the thinking of the field about what the potential for economic development is,’ he said.
